Beneath the mask, is a time bomb!

Hi ,

Living in NCR, I feel scared and unsafe 365*24*7. It’s not just about the latest news of heinous crimes against women that shake the very soul in me, what scares me more is the inhuman face of terror, of brutality, of cold blooded cruelty that lies beneath the everyday mask that humans wear. An autorickshaw driver, a vegetable vendor, bus driver even spiritual  Baba-these are people we come across almost every day. But did you ever imagine that if you scratch the surface, beneath lies a man capable of the most atrocious and unimaginable kind of cruelties?

It’s not rape or murder that I am talking about here, it’s much, MUCH more. It’s a violation of humanity, of womanhood, of life. It’s a violation of one’s very existence on earth. In a way, it could be said that with this level of the cruelty, the world and humanity did actually come to an end in December 2012 as per the Mayan calendar.

These incidents are just an extreme manifestation of a problem that ticks around us all the time waiting for the slightest provocation and there they are ready to explode in our faces. If you are one of those who doesn’t read disturbing reports and prefers to stay cocooned in a false sense of security, then things are fine for you. But when you come out of that dream, the reality is a nightmare. In the real world, you never know when you get unlucky enough to become the epicentre of someone’s volcano. There are people out there ever prepared to take offence and strike back. These days you hesitate before ticking off someone or even objecting to something. You tell off someone for hitting your car and he whips out a gun. You don’t allow your daughter to marry the man of her choice and she kills you. You protest when a man teases you, and he considers it his licence to stalk you and rape you. It seems that we are surrounded by ticking time bombs, human landmines you have to be careful not to step on, lest you trigger off an explosion that destroys you.

One of the most common question dwelling our minds are-“what the world is coming to? What led to this change?” An eminent psychiatrist summed it up as “nothing has changed. There is a time bomb beneath the surface of all of us. The animal instinct is part of our make up.We were, are and will always be animals who have learnt to train ourselves so as to fit in with our idea of a civilised society.

Now you will think, you and I wouldn’t ever be so brutal, remorseless. That is where education, culture, spirituality, consciousness-call it whatever-comes in. This is what helps us rise far above the basic animal instinct. Poverty, frustration, the deficit of law and order, lack of fear of consequences elicit people further and aggravates the minds that are very, very sick and ever ready to explode.

But the one thing that can act as “JAADU KI CHADI and save the rest from few sick minds is the rule of law aligned with zero tolerance policy. How safe your society is congruent to how strict and effective your law and most importantly how stringent its execution is. If people think they can get away with it they will push the boundaries. If the fear of atrociously inevitable consequences is made obvious in these sick minds, they will at least think twice before perpetrating such crimes. So the people who are responsible are the government, the policemen, the people on roads and yes US! We all need to be alert, vigil and firm in a zero tolerance policy and sensitive to help and protect the weakest in our society. Don’t wait for any of these sick minds to leave you shaking with rage and helplessness. Be your own ONE MAN ARMY, wherever you are. Don’t let anybody tear asunder the very fabric of your existence.
